CVTC uses the COMPASS test for admission and placement.
(Required for enrollment into CVTC programs)
Admissions tests are given in the Student Success Centers located on all three CVTC campuses.
The following is required when you come to test:
- No Appointment Necessary
- $15 non-refundable Application Fee is Due (one time fee)
- Picture ID Required

How does the COMPASS work?
COMPASS consists of testing in three basic categories:
- Writing Skills
- Reading Skills
- Numerical Skills
NOTE: All Degree programs require Algebra.
An additional test in Elementary Algebra is required for students planning to enroll in one of the following programs:
- Automated Manufacturing
- Aviation Maintenance
- Avionics Maintenance
- Diagnostic Medical Sonography
- Drafting (all drafting programs: certificates and diplomas)
- Echocardiography
- Electrical Control Systems
- Electronics Technology
- Industrial Mechanical Systems
- Industrial Systems
- Public Works Civil Technician
- Radiation Therapy
- Radiologic Technology
- Respiratory Therapy
- Vascular Technology
The purpose of the COMPASS test is to evaluate your current strengths academically. It provides the CVTC staff the information needed to place you in the proper career track so that you can better meet your educational goals.
Types of COMPASS test questions
The Writing Skills test measures your understanding of appropriate usage in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, writing strategy, and writing style.
The Reading Skills test measures your ability to find specific information in text, and to make logical inferences that extend beyond the text information.
The Numerical Skills test assesses your knowledge and skills in the performance of basic math operations using whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
The Elementary Algebra test measures pre-algebra knowledge and skills such as your understanding of prime numbers, absolute values, scientific notation, and square roots.
How to prepare for the COMPASS test
It is very important that when you test you are well rested and are not "rushed". Plan to arrive on campus with ample time to pay your application fee, complete an admissions application, and locate the testing center.

Additionally, the Student Success Centers contain a PassKey learning lab where you can prepare for the COMPASS test at a self directed pace.
