CVTC uses the COMPASS test for admission and placement.
(Required for enrollment into CVTC programs)

Admissions tests are given in the Student Success Centers located on all three CVTC campuses.

The following is required when you come to test:

Contact the Student Success Center nearest you for further admissions information:

Floyd County Campus: 706-802-5381
Gordon County Campus: 706-624-1112 or 624-1114
Polk County Campus: 770-684-7349

How does the COMPASS work?
COMPASS consists of testing in three basic categories:

  1. Writing Skills
  2. Reading Skills
  3. Numerical Skills

NOTE: All Degree programs require Algebra.

An additional test in Elementary Algebra is required for students planning to enroll in one of the following programs:

The purpose of the COMPASS test is to evaluate your current strengths academically. It provides the CVTC staff the information needed to place you in the proper career track so that you can better meet your educational goals.

Types of COMPASS test questions

The Writing Skills test measures your understanding of appropriate usage in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, writing strategy, and writing style.

The Reading Skills test measures your ability to find specific information in text, and to make logical inferences that extend beyond the text information.

The Numerical Skills test assesses your knowledge and skills in the performance of basic math operations using whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.

The Elementary Algebra test measures pre-algebra knowledge and skills such as your understanding of prime numbers, absolute values, scientific notation, and square roots.

How to prepare for the COMPASS test
It is very important that when you test you are well rested and are not "rushed". Plan to arrive on campus with ample time to pay your application fee, complete an admissions application, and locate the testing center.

If you think you may need to review the kind of information that will be on the test, you can go to the following websites for sample questions:

Compass Sample Questions can be obtained by visiting the website listed below:

You may want to visit Coosa Valley Technical College's Student Success Centers located on each campus.

Additionally, the Student Success Centers contain a PassKey learning lab where you can prepare for the COMPASS test at a self directed pace.

All services and assistance in the Student Success Centers are free.
