Wade is Chosen as CVTC’s GOAL Winner

Derrick Wade, an Early Childhood Education student at Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC), has been named as the college’s winner of the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL).

The announcement was made during the Seven Hills Rotary Club meeting at Coosa Country Club on March 11, 2008, by Al Hodge, President & CEO, Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce.

“Because of his attitude, career goals, and commitment, Derrick Wade has added professionalism to our classroom atmosphere,” said Kim Wheeler, Early Childhood Education Instructor, CVTC.

Wade was chosen by a panel of local leaders over three other nominees for the award. The runners-up were Jason Benton, Management and Supervisory Development; Terra Henderson, Marketing Management; and Kim Lewis, Vascular Technology.

“In a world where sometimes things don’t make sense, pursuing an education at Coosa Valley Technical College made sense,” Wade stated. “In order for us to be successful in the future we must retool, we must retrain, and the truth of the matter is, that’s what a technical college education provides. To state it simply, a technical college education just makes sense.”

GOAL, a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia, honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state’s technical college students. Local GOAL winners are selected at each of the state’s 33 technical colleges, as well as, the four Board of Regents colleges with technical education divisions.

Wade will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Atlanta in May where, for three-days, he will compete with GOAL winners from the other state technical college campuses. A panel of leaders from the business, industry and government sectors will interview them and choose one to be the state’s 2008 GOAL winner and the recipient of the GOAL medallion. The state wide winner will serve as an ambassador of technical education in the State of Georgia.
