Coosa Valley Technical College (CVTC), in partnership with the YMCA of Rome, began their first youth basketball camp for boys and girls, ages 6-12.

The camp began Monday and will run through Friday. The campers will have an introduction to the game of basketball and learn basic basketball skills. “Some of these kids have played the game before and some haven’t. We are just getting them interested in the game and teaching the basics. On Friday we plan to put it all together and play a couple of scrimmages,” stated Robbie Nash, CVTC Bruins Assistant Coach.

“The idea of a youth basketball camp was developed during the Bruins basketball and volleyball seasons,” said Jim Williams, CVTC Athletic Director and Coach. “Coach Nash and I thought this would be a good opportunity to build the teams’ leadership skills and give them an opportunity to do some community outreach.” The teams agreed. “We have four of our best players and a Truett-McConnell athlete here to help.”

Williams considers the youth basketball camp a continuation of a great partnership. “The camp is just another example of the great relationship between CVTC and the Y,” stated Williams. “The Y helped with the facility, the snacks, and even the coaches.”

What about a preview of the Bruins next basketball season? “Planning is underway with the other colleges, said Williams. “We will start conditioning and practicing in late August or September with formal practice beginning in October. The season will start around Thanksgiving and we will play until January with more schools this year.”
